Why this recipe works

Tastes like a milkshake, works like a meal

This tastes like a dessert and works like a meal. Frozen banana makes it thick and creamy without ice cream, and a spoonful of peanut butter adds the richness that keeps you full until lunch.

With 31g of protein and some carbs to refuel, it's our go-to after a morning workout. It's ready before you've finished stretching.

Keep sliced bananas in the freezer and you're always five minutes away from breakfast.

No ice cream needed

Frozen banana gives it a thick, milkshake texture on its own.

Make it yours

Ingredient swaps

Use what's already in your kitchen. Here is how each swap changes the dish.

More protein

Add 100 g of Greek yogurt for about 10g extra protein and 60 calories.

Lower calorie

Use 1 tbsp of powdered peanut butter to save about 60 calories.

No frozen banana?

Use a fresh banana plus an extra handful of ice.

Any milk

Skim dairy milk adds creaminess and about 7g of protein. Oat milk makes it a little sweeter.

Meal prep & storage

Freezer packs, faster mornings

Smoothies are best fresh, but you can do almost all the work ahead.

Best fresh

Serving

Drink it straight away. It separates if it sits for too long.

24 hours

In the fridge

If you need to, keep it in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to a day and shake well.

3 months

Freezer packs

Freeze sliced banana in portioned bags. In the morning, add milk, protein, cocoa and peanut butter.

1 glass

Portioning

The recipe makes one large smoothie, about 450 ml.

Recipe tips

Texture

Liquid in first

Adding the milk first stops the blades from jamming on frozen banana.

Flavor

Freeze ripe bananas

Spotty bananas are sweeter, so there's no need for added sugar.
