Why this recipe works

The snack that beats the vending machine

Keep a box of these in the fridge and you'll always have a snack that beats anything from a vending machine. They take 15 minutes, need no oven, and the mix of oats, peanut butter and protein powder keeps hunger in check between meals.

Two bites give you 13g of protein for 225 calories, enough to bridge a long afternoon or fuel a workout without feeling heavy.

They keep for a week in the fridge and three months in the freezer, so one batch goes a long way.

Make it yours

Ingredient swaps

Use what's already in your kitchen. Here is how each swap changes the dish.

Nut-free

Use sunflower seed butter instead of peanut butter.

Less sugar

Use 2 tbsp of honey and an extra splash of milk to bind.

Plant protein

Plant proteins absorb more liquid, so you may need an extra spoonful of milk.

Different mix-ins

Swap the chocolate chips for chopped dried fruit, cacao nibs or desiccated coconut.

Meal prep & storage

One batch, a week of snacks

Make them on Sunday and a healthy snack is waiting every day.

1 week

In the fridge

Keep in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week.

3 months

Freezing

Freeze on a tray, then bag. Thaw for 10 minutes or eat them straight from the freezer.

On the go

Packing

They hold their shape at room temperature for a few hours, so they travel well.

2 bites

Portioning

Two bites (about 56 g) is one serving, and the nutrition numbers are based on that.

Recipe tips

Texture

Do the squeeze test

The mixture should hold together when pressed. If it crumbles, add milk a teaspoon at a time.

Texture

Use damp hands

Slightly damp hands stop the mixture sticking and give you smoother balls.

Macros

Weigh the portions
